Motorists who hang air fresheners in their cars could face a fine and the penalty is heavy. Hanging the air freshener may seem harmless; they can result in fines for drivers if they're not careful. Anything hanging from the rearview mirror may result in fines for the driver.

Driving with obstacles on your windshield, windows, or in your car's line of sight can affect your reaction time and possibly cause an accident. While it's not unlawful to put decorations like cotton dice, air fresheners or stickers in your car, it could land you a £100 on-the-spot fine and three points. If your case goes to court, that fine could be £1,000 and three penalty points. The Highway Code states: “Windows and windows must be clean and free from obstructions to vision. The Road Traffic Law stipulates that: "No one may drive or cause to drive or allow another person to operate a motor vehicle on the road if that person is in a position where he or she cannot control the vehicle at all.
